Five years ago, my third child Jasper was born. I started to ask the question – what has technology done to our children? I was not impressed by what was available on the market, and very concerned about the negative impact of excess screen time on my own children. As much as we all claim to love our children and wish to provide the best environment for them to grow, we seemed to be inventing things that took them away from us and drive them to waste time on dopamine fueled trivial pleasure. I was convinced that I must not be alone in feeling this way. I therefore left KPCB and started Beyond Screen.
The original intention to invent Beyond Tablet was to create a game device without a display screen, such that Jasper could play with me, or by himself while we could watch over him without concerns. Over time, we realized that Beyond Tablet with physical manipulatives can become a powerful device that has the potential to transform early year education for every single young child.
It took us 5 years to invent Beyond Tablet. Time and time again we felt, perhaps, this type of device was forbidden by law of physics, as we were combining capacitive sensing and RFID recognition on the same surface, and we needed both to function well, together and independently. With the objective of using this device for my own child and the children of our colleagues, we strived and exhausted our limits to design and make Beyond Tablet with the safest choices of materials and technologies that we could implement.
As Silicon Valley and the broader world start to question the impact of screens on our children’s cognitive development, we are proud to present Beyond Tablet and Beyond Curriculum as a solution. As for me, I am so happy whenever Jasper asks me “Dad, let’s play Beyond Tablet!”
